View full detailsAmerican cylinders serve as the keyed locking mechanism in countless door systems, from multipoint lock handlesets to sliding patio doors. Unlike Euro profile cylinders common in European hardware, American cylinders use a round body with a flat rotating tailpiece that engages the lock mechanism. MPLocks carries American cylinders compatible with major brands including GU, Ferco, Pella, Peachtree, Andersen, and Ashland. Whether you're replacing a worn cylinder, rekeying for security, or matching cylinders across multiple doors, finding the right specifications ensures proper function and reliable security.
These American cylinders work with a wide range of multipoint lock systems and sliding door hardware. Most cylinders in this collection use the Schlage SC1 keyway—one of the most common residential keyways in North America—though Kwikset KW1 options are also available. This compatibility means you can often match your new cylinder to existing house keys or have a locksmith rekey it to your preferred key. Many cylinders are available keyed alike, allowing you to operate multiple doors with a single key for added convenience.
American cylinders come with varying tailpiece lengths to accommodate different door thicknesses and lock configurations. Standard tailpieces around 52mm work for typical 1-3/4 inch residential doors, while extra-long 90mm tailpieces are designed for 3-inch thick doors or smart lock applications like Danalock thumbturns. Many cylinders include break-off tailpieces that can be shortened to the exact length you need, providing flexibility during installation without requiring additional parts.
When installing an American cylinder, the orientation of the flat tailpiece matters. If the tailpiece is positioned horizontally during installation, there's a 50/50 chance it will engage correctly with the lock mechanism. For reliable operation every time, insert the tailpiece vertically. If the lock slot in your door is oriented incorrectly, simply use a screwdriver to rotate the slot before inserting the new cylinder. This small adjustment ensures proper engagement and smooth locking action from the start.
