Introduction to Multipoint Locks

Replacing a multipoint lock can feel overwhelming, but a few key measurements will simplify things quickly. With a little know-how, you can quickly narrow down your options and find the right replacement. Here’s what you need to know before you start shopping.

Step 1: Identify the Brand

There are dozens of multipoint lock manufacturers—Fuhr, Ferco, Hoppe, G-U, Winkhaus, Roto, Schlegel, Truth, W&F, and many more. Each brand has its own quirks, unique features, and design choices. Knowing the brand is the most important step in tracking down a replacement.

Step 2: Understand the Locking Points

Multipoint locks come in different configurations, with locking points placed at various positions along the faceplate. To identify your lock, you’ll need to measure and note a few details:

  • Faceplate width
  • Type and position of the locking devices (hooks, rollers, tongues, etc.)
  • Handle-to-thumb turn spacing
  • Backset (distance from the edge of the door to the center of the handle)

These measurements will help you find the closest possible match.

Step 3: Check Brand Availability

Not every lock brand is easy to find in the U.S. For example:

  • Fuhr (German) supplied locks to Caradco, Weathershield, Kolbe & Kolbe, Windsor, and others.
  • Ferco (French) supplied locks to The Atrium Door Company.

Unfortunately, many Fuhr and Ferco locks are no longer shipped to the United States. The good news? Replacement options do exist, and with the right adjustments, you can make them work.

Step 4: Don’t Panic—There Are Solutions

Even if your exact lock isn’t available, there are plenty of ways forward. We’ve organized locks by brand in easy-to-browse categories, so you can quickly find the information you need.

In some cases, you may need to retrofit a new lock into your existing door. This can usually be done with some careful adjustments, and if necessary, a skilled craftsman or locksmith can ensure a perfect fit.

Final Word

Multipoint locks might seem complicated at first, but once you know your brand, measurements, and options, the process gets much easier. With the right guidance and resources, you’ll be able to restore your door’s security and function without the guesswork.
