Locking positions on a multipoint lock describe the distance from the center of the handle to each locking device along the edge of the door, including hooks, rollers, shootbolts, or tongues.
These measurements are one of the most important factors when replacing a multipoint lock. Even a correct brand and overall size will fail if the locking points do not align with the existing strikes in the frame.
Most “almost fits” replacements fail because of this. The handle lines up correctly, but the hooks, rollers, or bolts land in the wrong locations.
Locking positions are measured from the center of the handle spindle outward along the faceplate. This reference point is closely related to the lock’s handle spacing (PZ measurement), which determines where the handle and cylinder align in relation to the internal mechanism.
Use the handle spindle center as your reference point, not the top or bottom of the door.
Measure straight up and down along the faceplate to every hook, roller, or bolt.
Confirm measurements against the replacement lock before installing it in the door.
Important distinction: Two locks can be identical in overall length and still be incompatible if the locking positions differ.
On multipoint systems that use extensions, the layout of those sections determines where locking devices land on the door. This is why replacement success depends on matching the original layout rather than relying on door height alone.
