Understanding HOPPE 16mm Active Door Extensions for HLS9000 Systems

Active door extensions are specifically engineered for the primary operating door in your entryway—the door that receives daily use and requires keyed access. MPLocks carries the full range of HOPPE 16mm middle and top shootbolt extensions needed to assemble or repair HLS9000 multipoint lock systems. These extensions feature a 5/8 inch (16mm) faceplate width and are designed with reversing gear mechanics, meaning when the serrated drive bar pulls down, the top shootbolt extends outward for secure locking engagement. This is the opposite of inactive door extensions, making proper identification critical for successful installation.

Croppable Design for Custom Door Heights

One of the most practical features of HOPPE top shootbolt extensions is their croppable design. Each extension can be trimmed by up to 3.94 inches (100mm) to accommodate various door heights, from standard 76-inch doors to oversized entries exceeding 113 inches. When cutting to your desired length, the faceplate and serrated drive bar must remain flush for proper operation. This flexibility makes these extensions ideal for custom installations and retrofit projects where exact measurements matter.

Building a Complete Lock Assembly

To create a functional multipoint lock, you need to combine a middle extension with a top extension and your gear assembly. The middle extension connects above the springlatch on your lower assembly, while the top extension attaches above the middle section to engage with the door frame header. HOPPE offers multiple middle extension lengths—including 24.09 inch, 27.20 inch, and 44.92 inch options—allowing you to match your specific door height requirements when paired with one of six available top extensions.

Active vs. Inactive: Why the Difference Matters

The most common mistake when ordering extensions is confusing active and inactive components. Active top extensions use reversing gear—pulling down on the drive bar causes the shootbolt to extend. Inactive extensions work in reverse, retracting when the drive bar moves down. Installing the wrong type will result in a lock that operates backwards or fails to secure properly. If you have a double door setup, the active extensions go on your primary entry door with the handle and lock, while inactive extensions are used on the stationary door panel.
