American Cylinder Flat Tail Piece (14280)

This replacement tail piece is designed for American style keyed cylinders with a flat tail piece configuration. The tail piece connects to the back of the cylinder, extends through the slot in the bolt or mortise case, and engages with the interior thumb turn, creating the mechanical connection between the key and thumb turn.

The tail piece features 5 break away score marks at 1/8 inch increments, allowing you to customize the length for thinner doors up to 1-5/8 inches thick. The overall length measures 1-1/16 inches (27mm).

Depress the spring loaded pin on the cylinder and unscrew the cap. Replace the existing tail piece with the new one, then reinstall the cap. After tightening fully, back off 2 notches for proper operation.

How do I adjust the tail piece for thinner doors?

The tail piece has 5 break away score marks at 1/8 inch increments. Simply snap off sections at the score marks to achieve the correct length for your door thickness.

Why is my key hard to turn after installing the tail piece?

If the key turns hard, the cylinder cap is too tight. Loosen it slightly. If the key won't come out, the cap is too loose and needs to be tightened.
