Half Dummy Half Passage Door Hardware Function Explained (No Key, No Thumbturn)

A half dummy / half passage function means the door trim works differently on each side of the door: one side is fixed (dummy) and the other side turns to operate the latch (passage). It is non-keyed and has no thumbturn, so it does not lock.

 IMPORTANT INFO

  • Outside handle: fixed (does not turn).

What “Dummy” And “Passage” Mean

Dummy means the handle is there for looks or pulling, but it does not turn and does not operate the latch.

Passage means the handle turns and opens the door by moving the latch, but it does not lock.

How Half Dummy / Half Passage Works

With this function, the outside trim stays rigid while the inside trim operates the door. This is helpful when you want controlled operation from one side only.

  • The outside lever is fixed and won’t retract a latch.
  • The inside lever turns and retracts the latch so the door can open.
  • There is no keyed cylinder and no inside thumbturn because it is not a locking function.

Where You’ll Commonly See It

This function is commonly used on inactive doors in a double-door setup, where only one door is used for everyday entry. The fixed side helps keep the outside appearance consistent without adding a working handle on that side.

How To Identify It On Your Door

  1. Check the outside handle: if it does not turn, it’s the dummy side.
  2. Check the inside handle: if it turns and opens the door, it’s the passage side.
  3. Confirm there is no key cylinder outside and no thumbturn inside.
